As you can see in my logo, it’s shows a likeness of my son and I.  This sums my life up in a nutshell. I am a single mother of a son who happens to have a form of Muscular Dystrophy called Spinal Muscular Atrophy and uses an electric wheelchair. His whole life I have never been far away and sometimes get ran over before I know it. Where he is, I am and where I am, he is.

He’s truly the most amazing guy you will ever meet and because of him I have traveled to six continents, stood with Britney Spears and her mom backstage the teen choice awards, walked a red carpet, flown in a hot air balloon over Israel, been in a commercial with Daryl Waltrip, learned some German, ate a Guinea Pig in Ecuador and coached a ball team that played a team of clowns, fed a full grown hippo with a baby bottle and the list goes on. Needless to say my life has been far from boring.

The special needs team I coached played a team of clowns. My son is third from left on the front row.

When he calls me and says, “Mom, guess what!” I respond with “I can’t even imagine…what?” And something far fetched and outlandish comes out of his mouth and off we go to make more memories. People who have crossed paths with us throughout the years have said that I need to write a book. Others just look at me when I tell my stories of my life and stare a blank stare like they think I am lying or trying to elaborate to make a better story. But no, no need to pad my tales.

Once in a lifetime experience in Israel.

If it can happen, it happens to us and I want to share with you all my Sandy trails, the trails of travel, inspiration, motivation and courage. I have always told my son since he was two years old, “If you can’t stand up, stand out” and that he has definitely accomplished.  I raised him to be independent and to focus on what he can do, not what he can’t and I jokingly say that I have created a monster. I don’t say that in a negative way, but in a way meaning a “monsterously big personality”. I hope that you will enjoy My Sandy Trail even half as much as I have living it.
